On the 18th November I gave birth to my little boy Jasper. Of course, giving birth to a beautiful baby that you have waited 9 long months for is an incredible experience for anyone, but I found my overall experience of birth to be an amazing and empowering one, and one that exceeded my expectations.
I was very keen on having a natural birth, and one of the main things that I had kept firmly in my mind when thinking ahead to my labour was that I wanted to be calm, relaxed and in touch with my body – I was of course mindful that a lot of people plan a natural birth and their plans can easily go out of the window when the pain sets in. I was also aware that I wanted to be at home for the majority of my labour, and try to cope with the contractions at home with my partner. Incredibly, my labour was all I had hoped for – and more.
I had worked with Susie on visualisations during our sessions together, and these proved to be invaluable both in the preparation and during my labour. One of the visualisations in particular really helped me in connecting and giving responsibility to my partner (even though I never told him – it was all in my head and he didn’t need to know!) Mentally I gave my partner the responsibility of being my “voice” during the labour, and my visualisations gave me the feeling of trust when asking my partner to give the midwifes direction or ask for practical things – before the work with Susie, I had been panicking that I would have to do take responsibility for each moment of my birth, and not be able to focus on connecting with my baby and my body. Susie also uses the idea about picturing my cervix as a flower that was slowly opening with each contraction – and this really worked for me. Throughout the labour I really maintained focus and a relationship with my baby, something again, that Susie had encouraged throughout the reflexology sessions we had together.
I would encourage any woman at any stage of pregnancy to work with Susie as a preparation for labour, but also as a beautiful way of connecting with their unborn baby. You can take what you want from the sessions – the visualisations are fantastic for some people, but also Susie is just wonderful to talk to and share, concerns and thoughts with.
Thank You Susie for your help, kindness and support!
